The Stables Bar & Kitchen Ystradgynlais Review

The Stables Bar & Kitchen sits beautifully alongside Kindle House on the banks of the River Tawe, offering one of those instantly calming waterside settings that feels especially special on a warm summer’s day. The combination of riverside views, relaxed atmosphere, and live music makes it a strong local spot for both casual dining and pre-event meet-ups.

We visited ahead of the Ystradgynlais welfare event to see the Panedeni Band, meeting up with friends Rachel and Clare, and also being joined by Stacey for the first time. Despite the venue already hosting live entertainment preparations, the team kindly managed to fit us in at short notice, which set a welcoming tone for the evening.

Setting & Atmosphere

The standout feature here is the location. Sitting beside the River Tawe, it feels open, airy, and perfect for unwinding. The covered courtyard area, known as The Yard, adds extra comfort with cosy heaters and a relaxed vibe, and it becomes a lively hub during Friday evening live music. In the summer, the Sunday Riverside Sessions create an easy-going, festival-like feel without needing to travel far.

It’s the kind of place where you can genuinely sit back, enjoy a drink, and let the music and surroundings do the rest.

Drinks

Before food, we ordered cocktails to start the evening. I chose a Mojito — white rum, fresh lime and mint muddled together, topped with soda water. Rachel went for a Pornstar Martini, made with vanilla vodka, passionfruit and pineapple, shaken into a fruity cocktail and served with a side of prosecco. Visually, it looked impressive and certainly got a few laughs over the name, adding a bit of fun to the table.

However, my Mojito was slightly disappointing in execution. The soda water appeared to be warm, meaning I had to rely heavily on the ice to bring the drink down to temperature. On what was a warm evening, it wasn’t quite the refreshing, chilled start you’d expect from a cocktail like this.

Food & Drinks

We started by planning to share the Flatbread – Anchovies & Olives, but as this wasn’t available, we opted for the Spicy Chicken Flatbread instead. This came with tomato sauce, mozzarella, cheddar, hot honey, lime, and chilli — and it turned out to be a great alternative. The balance of sweetness and heat worked really well, and it was one of the highlights of the meal.

We also ordered two Greek Salads, which included tomatoes, green peppers, red onion, cucumber, feta, and olives served with ciabatta. While the flavours were fresh, both Stacey and ourselves felt the portion was quite disappointing for a main dish. The amount of feta was minimal, and the absence of ciabatta on one plate was noticeable. Overall, it felt closer to a side salad than a full meal considering the price point.

Clare chose the Quesadillas – pulled beef and melted cheese in toasted tortillas, served with pico de gallo, sour cream, and a side of patatas bravas with garlic and tomato sauce. This dish looked the most substantial and was well-received, offering a more filling and balanced plate compared to the salads.

Overall Impression

The Stables Bar & Kitchen delivers strongly on atmosphere, location, and live music experience. It’s a fantastic social spot, especially when combining food with an evening event or riverside gathering.

Food-wise, there were highs and lows. The spicy chicken flatbread stood out as a definite winner, while the Greek salad felt underwhelming in portion and value. However, the friendly service and willingness to accommodate us at short notice added positively to the overall experience.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a relaxed riverside venue with music, scenery, and a social vibe, this is an easy recommendation. For food, it’s worth choosing carefully from the menu — some dishes feel more value-driven than others.
