There’s nothing quite like finishing a shopping trip with an ice cream during a summer heatwave. After an afternoon shopping in Swansea with my elderly parents, we decided to stop at Joe’s Ice Cream in Llansamlet. We wanted a well-deserved treat and a chance to cool down.
Located at 3 Heron Way, Llansamlet, Swansea, SA6 8WB, this takeaway branch sits conveniently just off the M4. It is an ideal stop for travellers and shoppers alike. If you’re craving one of Swansea’s most famous desserts, Joe’s is well worth a visit.

A Welsh Ice Cream Legend Since 1922
Joe’s Ice Cream has played an important role in Swansea’s history for more than 100 years. Joe Cascarini founded the family business in 1922. Today, four generations later, the family still uses the same unique vanilla recipe. They continue to churn their signature fresh vanilla ice cream every day.
The company celebrated 100 years of ice cream making in Wales in 2022. The original recipe remains at the heart of the business. As a result, it continues to delight new generations of ice cream lovers.
Unlike many commercial ice creams, Joe’s famous vanilla is designed to be enjoyed fresh. Its creamy texture and distinctive flavour have made it a Swansea favourite for generations.

Our Visit to Joe’s Ice Cream Llansamlet
Following a busy shopping trip in Swansea, we were looking for the perfect way to cool down during the hot weather. Joe’s Ice Cream Llansamlet proved to be exactly what we needed.
Although the Llansamlet branch is takeaway only, it is ideally located for picking up one of Joe’s famous ice creams before continuing your journey. We took our treats away and enjoyed them in the sunshine, making it a simple but enjoyable end to our day.

The Luxury Chocolate Sundae
Dad and I both decided on the Luxury Chocolate Sundae.
This classic dessert features Joe’s famously fresh vanilla ice cream layered with a rich chocolate sauce. The smooth vanilla and luxurious chocolate complemented each other perfectly, creating a dessert that was indulgent without being overly sweet.
Every spoonful was creamy, satisfying and packed with flavour. It was exactly what we needed on such a warm summer day.
Keeping It Classic
Mam chose two scoops of Joe’s famous vanilla ice cream, complete with two chocolate flakes.
Sometimes the simplest option is the best, and Joe’s signature vanilla certainly speaks for itself. Smooth, creamy and full of flavour, it remains one of the most recognisable ice creams in South Wales.
As soon as I tasted mine, I was reminded why Joe’s has remained so popular for generations. It was exactly as I remembered—absolutely delicious.
More Than Just Vanilla
Although Joe’s is best known for its fresh vanilla ice cream, the family also produces a range of award-winning frozen flavours.
Joe’s nephew, Enrico Cascarini, spent many hours perfecting a recipe for ice cream that customers could enjoy at home. Today, the family uses that recipe as the foundation for many flavours. However, the original fresh vanilla remains the favourite choice for many customers.
However, for many customers, the original fresh vanilla remains the star of the show.
Other Joe’s Ice Cream Locations
While Llansamlet is a convenient takeaway location, Joe’s also operates parlours in other locations where customers can sit and enjoy their ice cream. These include venues in Swansea, Mumbles and Cardiff.

The Verdict
This visit reminded me exactly why Joe’s Ice Cream has become such a Swansea institution.
The Luxury Chocolate Sundae was rich, creamy and thoroughly enjoyable, while Mam’s classic vanilla proved that the original recipe remains just as good as ever. Combined with the welcoming atmosphere and the opportunity to cool down during the summer heatwave, it made for a perfect stop after our shopping trip.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or visiting for the first time, Joe’s Ice Cream Llansamlet is well worth a visit. After more than 100 years of ice cream making, it’s easy to see why generations of people continue to return for a taste of this iconic Welsh treat.
