There is always a great atmosphere around the Swansea.com Stadium on match days, and during a recent Swansea City friendly I arranged to meet friends for lunch at one of the city’s newest dining venues – Theatre Bistro, located at 176 Neath Road, Plasmarl, opposite the stadium.
The restaurant occupies the attractive outbuilding beside the historic former Landore Cinema and on the site most recently occupied by the Boss Brewing Company bar. From the moment we arrived, the venue made an excellent first impression. Beautifully furnished with contemporary décor, comfortable seating and a bright, welcoming atmosphere, everything appeared spotless throughout. It is clear that considerable thought and investment has gone into creating an attractive dining destination.
A Slightly Confusing Start
We were seated between 11:30am and 12:00pm, with staff being friendly, welcoming and attentive throughout our visit. However, there was some confusion over which menu we should be using.
Initially we were given both the breakfast and lunchtime menus. The lunchtime menu immediately caught my attention, offering lighter dishes including fresh salads, fish and jacket potatoes—exactly the sort of meal I was hoping for before heading to the football.
Shortly afterwards, however, we were presented with the main menu instead. While it certainly offered plenty of choice, it was largely centred around substantial dishes including steaks, beef meals, gourmet burgers and pizzas. If you’re looking for a hearty lunch, you’ll certainly find plenty of tempting options. Personally, though, I found these choices a little too heavy for midday before a football match. I would much rather have enjoyed one of the lighter lunchtime dishes, which seemed far better suited to the occasion.
My Choice – Grilled Chicken Breast
After weighing up the options, I chose the Grilled Chicken Breast.
The chicken itself was nicely seasoned, tender and juicy, showing it had been cooked with care. While perfectly enjoyable, I felt the dish lacked something to elevate it beyond simply being “okay.”
As the plate looked rather plain, I requested a side salad alongside my chips, and I’m pleased I did. The salad was fresh, crisp and colourful, adding some welcome balance to the meal. A selection of dressings would have made it even better.
Unfortunately, the chips were the weakest part of the dish. Rather than being crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle, they were unexpectedly tough and chewy. They felt as though they may have been over-fried or perhaps prepared using a potato variety that wasn’t ideal for producing good-quality chips.
Overall, the dish needed something extra to bring it together. A suitable sauce recommendation—or the option to choose from a range of sauces—would have added flavour and completed the plate much more successfully.
What My Friends Ordered
My friends sampled several dishes which looked particularly appetising, including:
- Onion Rings
- Popcorn Cockles & Bacon, served with laverbread mayonnaise
- Pulled Pork – slow-roasted pork belly served with crisp crackling, cider jus and beautifully tender meat.
These dishes certainly looked appealing and would definitely tempt me to try something different on a future visit.
Value for Money
Although the restaurant itself is beautifully presented and the service was pleasant, I didn’t feel my own meal offered particularly good value for money.
The chicken was cooked well, but the disappointing chips, lack of accompanying sauce and the fairly plain presentation meant the overall dish fell a little short of expectations considering the price.
If I return—and I certainly would—I think I’d opt for something from the lunchtime menu, or perhaps even a jacket potato, which personally feels a much better choice before watching a football match.
Food Hygiene Rating
As Theatre Bistro only opened during July 2026, it does not yet have a publicly listed Food Hygiene Rating on the Food Standards Agency website. This is entirely normal for a newly opened business, as inspections are carried out after trading begins.
A Little Local History
One of the nicest aspects of visiting Theatre Bistro is its location beside one of Swansea’s historic landmarks—the former Landore Cinema on Neath Road.
The cinema was once an important entertainment venue for local residents and remained a familiar feature of the Landore streetscape for many decades. Although the restaurant occupies the neighbouring outbuilding rather than the cinema itself, it is encouraging to see fresh investment bringing new life to this part of Landore.
The former cinema building remains an important reminder of Swansea’s rich cultural heritage, and hopefully it will continue to be preserved for future generations while the surrounding site develops into a thriving destination once again.
Final Thoughts
The Theatre Bistro has made an impressive start. The venue is stylish, immaculately clean and offers a warm welcome from attentive staff.
For me, however, the food didn’t quite reach the same high standard as the surroundings. The grilled chicken was enjoyable, but the accompaniments lacked refinement and the menu confusion slightly affected the overall experience.
That said, there is plenty of potential here. The restaurant offers an extensive menu, particularly if you enjoy steaks, burgers, pizzas and other hearty dishes. My own preference simply leans towards lighter meals at lunchtime, especially before attending a football match.
I would happily return to sample the lunchtime menu, as I suspect it would better suit both my taste and the time of day.

A stylish new addition to Swansea’s dining scene with welcoming service and excellent surroundings. A few refinements to the menu offering, accompaniments and overall value could make this an excellent pre-match dining destination.
