A Perfect Start to Our Hereford Day Trip

Our day trip from Swansea to Hereford could not have started in a better way. Before exploring the city’s historic streets, we stopped for coffee and cake at the delightful The Garden Café, tucked away in the charming Capuchin Yard just off Church Street.

Finding the café felt like discovering one of Hereford’s best-kept secrets. A narrow, old-fashioned alleyway suddenly opens into a beautiful courtyard filled with flowers, greenery and outdoor seating. Despite being only a few steps from the bustling city centre, the courtyard offers a peaceful escape where you can slow down and relax.

It was the perfect setting to begin our day.

A Café with Passion and Personality

The Garden Café opened in 2023 and has quickly built an excellent reputation among both locals and visitors. The independent café focuses on freshly prepared vegetarian and vegan food, artisan coffee, homemade cakes and seasonal ingredients. Their philosophy centres on quality, creativity and warm hospitality, creating a welcoming space where everyone can enjoy delicious homemade food in a relaxed environment. The café has also become known for its beautiful courtyard garden, making it one of Hereford’s most unique places to eat.

Friendly Service

Our group received a lovely welcome from the moment we arrived.

Special praise goes to our waitress, who remained cheerful, patient and attentive throughout our visit. She handled our slightly mischievous group with a smile and ensured everyone was well looked after. Excellent customer service can make all the difference, and the staff certainly helped make our visit memorable.

A big thank you also goes to our friend Rachel, who included The Garden Café in her carefully planned day trip itinerary. It proved to be an inspired choice.

Raspberry Frangipane

My choice was the Raspberry Frangipane, and it looked every bit as good as it tasted.

The buttery pastry provided a crisp base, while the rich almond frangipane filling was wonderfully moist and full of delicate nutty flavour. Sweet raspberries were scattered throughout, adding little bursts of sharpness that balanced the richness perfectly.

The combination of buttery pastry, soft almond sponge and juicy fruit created a beautifully textured cake that wasn’t overly sweet. Every bite tasted freshly baked and carefully crafted.

Decaffeinated Skinny Cappuccino

I ordered a decaffeinated skinny cappuccino, which exceeded my expectations.

Many cafés offer decaffeinated coffee simply as an alternative. However, few manage to produce one with the same depth of flavour as their regular coffee. The Garden Café certainly does.

The coffee had a rich aroma, a smooth body and a balanced flavour without any bitterness. Meanwhile, the perfectly textured skimmed milk created a light, silky foam that complemented the espresso beautifully. It was one of the nicest decaffeinated cappuccinos I have enjoyed in quite some time.

Quality You Can Taste

It was obvious that great care had gone into both the drinks and the cakes.

Everything tasted freshly prepared using quality ingredients. Rather than offering mass-produced cakes, The Garden Café clearly takes pride in baking items that are both attractive and full of flavour.

The café also serves homemade focaccia sandwiches, seasonal brunch dishes, locally roasted artisan coffee and an impressive range of vegetarian and vegan options, making it a destination worth visiting throughout the day.

Final Thoughts

The Garden Café combines excellent coffee, delicious homemade cakes and genuinely friendly service in one of Hereford’s prettiest hidden courtyards.

Whether you’re visiting Hereford Cathedral, shopping in the city centre or simply looking for somewhere peaceful to enjoy quality refreshments, this charming independent café is well worth seeking out.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would happily return the next time we’re in Hereford.

Highly recommended.
