A Pub Full of Memories

During Pride 2026, Gareth, Jerry and I decided to stop for lunch at The Pontardawe Inn. The pub was a convenient choice during the celebrations and gave us an opportunity to support a local business while enjoying a meal together.

The Pontardawe Inn has always held a special place in my memories. As a young person, I spent many enjoyable times there with school friends, creating memories that have stayed with me over the years. Returning to the pub brought back plenty of nostalgia and reminded me of those carefree days.

The Story Behind “The Gwachel”

Locally, The Pontardawe Inn is often known as “The Gwachel”, meaning “hidden”. The nickname comes from an old roadside warning sign that warned drivers about a hidden dip in the road caused by the nearby ford crossing the River Tawe.

It is a fascinating piece of local history that adds extra character to a venue that has been part of the community for generations. Knowing the story behind the name helps connect visitors to the area’s past and gives the pub a unique identity.

My Choice – House Salad with Prawns

For lunch, I chose the House Salad topped with prawns and Marie Rose sauce.

The salad included mixed leaves, cucumber, tomato, red onion, red pepper, quinoa, kale, brown rice and soya beans, all tossed in a French dressing and finished with crispy onions.

The ingredients were fresh and colourful, while the prawns and Marie Rose sauce added extra flavour. The salad was filling without feeling heavy and proved to be a refreshing choice on a busy day.

Gareth’s Choice – The Ultimate Veggie Burger

Gareth chose The Ultimate Veggie Burger, one of the more adventurous options on the menu.

The burger featured a deep-fried sweetcorn and Cheddar cheese patty topped with BBQ sauce and BBQ cauliflower wings, all smothered in a nacho cheese sauce. It was served with skin-on fries and a BBQ sauce dip.

The presentation was impressive, and the burger certainly stood out when it arrived at the table. The combination of flavours was indulgent, with the smoky BBQ elements working well alongside the cheesy toppings. It was a substantial meal and a good choice for anyone looking for a vegetarian option packed with flavour.

Jerry’s Choice – Beef Burger

Jerry opted for the classic beef burger.

Served with skin-on fries, the burger looked well presented and offered a traditional pub meal. The portion size was generous and provided a hearty lunch during the Pride celebrations.

Sometimes a classic choice is exactly what is needed, and Jerry appeared more than happy with his selection.

Service During a Busy Event

The Pontardawe Inn was understandably busy due to the Pride event taking place in the town. In addition to serving customers inside the pub, staff were also helping to cater for those attending the celebrations.

Considering the number of people visiting throughout the day, the service was good. Staff remained friendly, professional and worked hard to keep food and drinks flowing despite the increased demand.

Although there was a short wait at times, it was reasonable given the circumstances. The team deserves credit for managing such a busy period while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.

Atmosphere and Experience

The atmosphere was lively, with many visitors enjoying the Pride celebrations throughout Pontardawe. The pub provided a comfortable place to take a break, enjoy a meal and catch up with friends.

For me, the visit was made even more special by the memories associated with the venue. It is always enjoyable returning to a place that has played a part in your life, especially when it remains an important part of the local community.

Final Thoughts

Our visit to The Pontardawe Inn during Pride 2026 was an enjoyable experience. The food was satisfying, the atmosphere was welcoming and the staff coped admirably with the demands of a busy event day.

My House Salad with prawns offered a fresh and lighter option, Gareth’s Ultimate Veggie Burger delivered plenty of flavour and indulgence, while Jerry’s beef burger provided a reliable pub classic.

Combined with the pub’s history, its local character and the memories it holds for me personally, the visit was about more than just the food. It was a chance to reconnect with a familiar place and support a long-standing local business during an important community event.

The Pontardawe Inn remains a pub full of character, history and community spirit. While there is room for improvement in some areas of the dining experience, it continues to be a welcoming venue and an important part of Pontardawe’s social scene.
