There are many cafés and restaurants to choose from in Swansea today, but when I meet my parents for a meal or coffee, we often find ourselves returning to one particular favourite — the iconic Kardomah Café.
My parents are not always keen on some of the more modern food outlets, especially those with complicated menus or trendy dishes. They prefer somewhere familiar where the menu is clear, the food is traditional, and the atmosphere feels welcoming. The Kardomah Café provides exactly that.
Over time, these visits have become a small family ritual. Whether it is for breakfast, lunch, or simply a cup of coffee, the café offers a warm, relaxed environment that makes it easy to slow down and enjoy good conversation together.

A Café Frozen in the 1950s
One of the most distinctive things about the Kardomah Café is its authentic mid-twentieth-century atmosphere. Walking through the doors feels like stepping back into the 1950s.
The café still features much of its original décor, including wood panelling, classic tiled columns, and traditional table settings. Adding to the nostalgic charm, the waitresses wear lace pinafores, a detail that reflects the café’s long-standing traditions.
Unlike many modern venues that constantly reinvent themselves, the Kardomah has stayed true to its roots. The result is a café that feels genuine rather than manufactured.
The menu is also wonderfully extensive, offering everything from hearty breakfasts and sandwiches to traditional hot meals, desserts, and of course good coffee and tea. It is exactly the type of place where everyone can find something they enjoy.
For my parents, that sense of familiarity is important. For me, it is part of what makes each visit special.

A Menu That Keeps Us Coming Back
One of the reasons we return so often is the variety of classic meals on the menu. It is the kind of place where everyone can find something they enjoy.
My own regular choice is the beef dinner, which is one of the café’s popular traditional meals. It is a comforting plate that always feels satisfying — especially on cooler days when you want something hearty.
My Dad, however, always knows exactly what he wants before we even sit down. He cannot resist his favourite Chicken Thai Curry served with half and half — a very Swansea combination of half chips and half rice. It is a dish he orders almost every time we visit.

Served with vegetables, roast potatoes and mashed potato.

Meals like these are a big part of the Kardomah’s appeal. The food is generous, familiar and consistently good — exactly what many people look for in a traditional café.

The Kardomah and Swansea’s Literary History
The name Kardomah carries a remarkable piece of Swansea’s cultural history.
The original Kardomah Café in Swansea was once a meeting place for a group of writers and artists known as the Kardomah Gang. Among them was the famous Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
Thomas and his friends would meet regularly at the café to talk, debate ideas, and share creative inspiration. The poet famously referred to it affectionately as “my home sweet homah.”
Although the original Kardomah premises were destroyed during the Swansea Blitz in 1941, the café was later re-established in its current location on Portland Street in 1957. Today it remains the last surviving Kardomah café from what was once a larger chain across the UK.
Knowing that such an important literary figure once spent time in a café bearing the same name adds another layer of character to every visit.

A Café That Appears on Screen
The café’s authentic retro appearance has also attracted attention from television producers.
Scenes for the long-running BBC science fiction series Doctor Who were filmed inside the Kardomah Café, using its preserved mid-century interior as a perfect backdrop.
For locals, it is always fun to recognise familiar locations appearing on screen, and the Kardomah’s distinctive look makes it instantly recognisable.
A National Campaign with HP Sauce
More recently, the Kardomah Café received national attention through a campaign by the famous British condiment brand HP Sauce.
The campaign celebrated traditional British cafés that continue to serve classic breakfasts and comfort food. As part of the promotion, the Kardomah Café was featured in promotional material highlighting authentic café culture and the role independent cafés play in communities across the UK.
It was a fitting choice. Few places represent the enduring tradition of the British café quite like the Kardomah.

Why We Keep Returning
For my parents and me, the Kardomah Café is more than just somewhere to eat. It is a place that combines family routine, local history, and genuine hospitality.
There is something comforting about visiting a café that has stayed true to itself for decades. While many places come and go, the Kardomah continues to serve the same welcoming atmosphere it has offered generations of Swansea residents.
Every visit feels like stepping briefly out of the modern rush and into a place where things move at a gentler pace — good food, good company, and a little piece of Swansea’s history.
And that is exactly why we keep going back.
