Happy World Sandwich Day!

Few things are as comforting or universal as the humble sandwich. Simple, versatile, and impossible not to love, it’s a star on lunch tables and picnic blankets everywhere. Today, we celebrate it in all its delicious forms!

To mark the occasion, I chose one of my favourites. Fresh smoked salmon with soft cheese, chives, cracked black pepper, and a squeeze of lemon. The flavours are light yet rich, creamy with a little citrus kick. I layered it all inside an Ancient Grain Roll packed with seeds from the bakery section at my local Tesco in Ystradgynlais in the Swansea Valley. Every bite felt fresh, wholesome, and indulgent in the best way.

A Bite of History

World Sandwich Day is celebrated every year on November 3rd, honouring John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Legend has it he requested meat tucked between slices of bread so he could continue gambling without using a fork—thus inspiring one of the greatest food inventions of all time.

Since then, the sandwich has gone global, evolving into delicious variations like:
🥖 Vietnamese bánh mì
🥪 Mexican torta
🍞 Scandinavian smørrebrød
…and of course, classics like the BLT, club sandwich, and grilled cheese.
