Basekamp Swansea: A Foodie’s Perspective

A Historic Setting

On a brisk February afternoon, my friend and I sought refuge from the cold at Basekamp Swansea Coffee Shop, tucked away on King’s Lane—just off High Street in Swansea. The café occupies a historic Victorian warehouse that once housed Down and Sons, a furniture manufacturing company that operated for over a century between 1889 and 1995. Coastal Housing recently renovated the space, preserving its historic exterior while modernizing the interior to accommodate Basekamp and other retail spaces. Since it survived Swansea’s wartime blitz, this architectural gem holds a significant place in the city’s heritage.

A Bustling Atmosphere

Stepping inside, we encountered a lively, bustling environment filled with the chatter of customers and the laughter of young children. Despite the noise, we took our time perusing the menu, only to find limited vegetarian options. However, the accommodating staff happily adjusted a dish for us, serving a falafel and hummus bagel packed with fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and a spicy sauce, alongside a side of crisps. The flavours balanced well, and the bagel had a satisfying texture—crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside.

Modern Décor with Some Drawbacks

The café’s décor embraces a simplistic, modern aesthetic, offering a welcome contrast to the dreary weather outside. However, the state of the restrooms detracted from our experience, as they needed better upkeep. Given the café’s evident popularity, we hope this issue does not persist, as cleanliness plays a crucial role in the overall dining experience.

Final Thoughts

Despite this minor drawback, we enjoyed our visit to Basekamp Swansea. The staff’s willingness to accommodate dietary preferences stood out, making our experience more pleasant. With more attention to detail in certain areas, this café has the potential to become a go-to spot for both locals and visitors seeking a cosy retreat in Swansea’s city centre.
